Overview
The Korowai Tribe is an indigenous group residing in the southeastern part of Papua, Indonesia. Known for their unique culture and traditions, the Korowai have garnered attention for their fascinating way of life, which has remained relatively isolated from modern civilization until recent decades.
Timika, Ewer, Agats
Arrive at Mozes Kilangin airport in Timika, then take the next flight to Ewer, arrive at Ewer then by boat continue to Agats, short walk to hotel, after check in you may walk around the town while the guide preparing the needs for the trip next day. Lunch and dinner at hotel restaurant.
Agats, Suator, Mabul
After breakfast at hotel, by boat heading to Suator in about 9 hours, arrive in Suator check in to a local simple accommodation for dinner and overnight at the accommodation. Traveling is approximately 8-9 hours by boat.
Mabul, trekking to Korowai Village
After breakfast, we continue our journey by boat upriver toward Mabul village. Upon arriving in Mabul, we enjoy packed lunches before picking up porters to assist us. From there, we embark on a five-hour trek through swamps, occasionally walking over logs or fallen trees and crossing rivers with or without bridges. This trek takes us through the lush, expansive tropical rainforest of Papua's lowlands, offering a chance to discover and experience its exotic wonders. However, the journey also comes with challenges such as mosquitoes, swamps, heat, and high humidity (85–100%). Our trek will be supported by local porters who carry our bags and gear and are ready to assist with any challenging sections of the trail. The Korowai people, a nomadic group, move to new locations at least once every three years. They live in small groups, and at each treehouse site, you’ll typically find only two to four treehouses built close to one another.
Korowai Village
Whole day learn the way of Korowai build a tree house. A good moment to comprehend the locals daily habits. We may see how they work in their garden, how they cook their food, take care of their children, etc. they are still semi nomadic, sometimes they go deep into the jungle to search for food. They collect young sprout, fruits from the jungle, and hunting animals too. When they go for hunting, they will take their family along. The Korowai tribe food staple are mostly sago which is supplemented with the “jungle vegetable, or insects, or else. Thy wrap those food in the leaves, and cook them on the fire. You may also try their food which is taken from the jungle.
Korowai Excursion
After breakfast continue walk to another village, lunch at the village, after lunch with the Korowai people setting fish trap in the river for Sago worms. Dinner and overnight in tents set in long house.
Korowai, Mabul, Suator
We do the same trek, the same way back from Korowai Village to Mabul. Arrival in Suator in the late afternoon by speedboat.
Suator, Agats
We do the same trek, the same way back from Suator to Agats (by boat).
Agats, Ewer, Timika
Back to the civilization, by flight back to Timika. Stay overnight at Swiss Belinn Timika Hotel.
Timika, Departure
Enjoy breakfast before saying goodbye to your crew. Straight from the Hotel, we will transfer you to the airport for your next destinations.
