FAQ

Common Questions

Can I join this Toraja small group journey as a solo traveller?

Absolutely. Solo travellers are welcome to join Pacébo's scheduled small group departures. With no more than eight guests, the journey offers an opportunity to discover Toraja alongside travellers who share an interest in culture, history and local traditions. Prices are based on double occupancy, and a single supplement may apply if you prefer a room for individual use. Room-sharing arrangements depend on availability and the composition of the group. Please contact Pacébo before booking to confirm your accommodation preferences and any applicable supplement.

What happens if my preferred departure does not reach the minimum number of participants?

Scheduled departures are guaranteed once a minimum of four guests has been confirmed. If your preferred departure has not yet reached this number, Pacébo will advise you of its current status and discuss the available options. Depending on availability, these may include joining another scheduled departure or considering a different travel arrangement. Changes, cancellations and any applicable refunds are governed by the booking conditions confirmed for your reservation. We recommend checking that your departure is guaranteed before purchasing non-refundable flights or making other fixed travel commitments.

Should I arrive in Makassar before the first day of the journey?

We strongly recommend arriving in Makassar the day before your scheduled departure. The first group meeting takes place at 7:30 a.m. on Day 1, followed by the journey towards Toraja. Arriving the previous evening allows time to recover from your flight and reduces the risk of missing the group departure. Please confirm the exact meeting location and any necessary transfers with Pacébo before booking your flights. If you arrive late, the group may not be able to delay its programme, and alternative arrangements would need to be assessed separately.

Can I book an evening flight from Makassar on the final day?

The group is expected to return to Makassar at approximately 6:00 p.m. on Day 4. However, this is an estimated arrival time rather than a guaranteed schedule. Traffic, road conditions and unforeseen delays can affect the return journey from Toraja. We recommend avoiding flights that depart shortly after the expected arrival time, particularly when international connections are involved. Please share your proposed flight details with Pacébo before purchasing non-refundable tickets. An additional night in Makassar may be preferable for travellers who want a more relaxed departure.

Is the journey suitable for older travellers or families with children?

The minimum age for this departure is 10 years. Active older travellers and families with children who meet this requirement may find the journey rewarding, provided they are comfortable with extended road transfers, steps and occasional uneven village paths. Some cultural sites are not fully accessible, and conditions can become slippery after rain. Travellers with reduced mobility, knee difficulties or other concerns should discuss their needs with Pacébo before booking. Participation should be assessed individually, with consideration for both personal comfort and the shared pace of the group.

Can I skip an activity or travel at a different pace from the group?

A small group journey offers a personal atmosphere, but the daily programme is shared by all participants. Your guide may adjust walking speed, rest breaks or minor timings when conditions allow. If you prefer to skip an early-morning outing or a particular walk, please inform the guide as early as possible so that a safe and practical arrangement can be considered. Separate transportation, private guiding or alternative excursions cannot always be provided. Changes must take into account the other participants, local conditions and the overall schedule.

What etiquette should we observe when visiting Torajan communities and culturally significant sites?

Respectful behaviour is essential when encountering Toraja's living traditions. Guests should follow their guide's advice, dress appropriately and request permission before photographing people, entering private spaces or documenting ceremonies. Funeral rituals are meaningful family and community occasions, not performances organised for visitors. Whether a ceremony can be visited depends on its actual occurrence, local circumstances and the consent of those involved. Visitors should never assume that access or photography is automatically permitted. Pacébo encourages thoughtful cultural exchanges that respect the dignity, beliefs and privacy of local residents.

What language is used during the tour, and can special dietary requirements be accommodated?

English is the guiding language for this scheduled small group journey, allowing participants from different countries to follow the explanations and shared activities together. Guests who require another language should contact Pacébo before booking to discuss possible arrangements. We can also review vegetarian preferences, food allergies and other dietary requirements when informed sufficiently in advance. Meal choices may be more limited in rural areas, and separate food preparation or completely allergen-free meals cannot always be guaranteed. Please provide any important dietary information during your booking enquiry.
