Travel south to Sengkang for Bugis silk weaving and a boat journey on Lake Tempe. Near Bira, discover wooden boatbuilding traditions before settling into Amatoa Resort. An island excursion to Kambing and Liukang Loe brings time for snorkelling and coastal scenery before your return to Makassar.

FAQ

Common Questions

Can I join this South Sulawesi journey as a solo traveller?

Absolutely. Solo travellers are welcome to join our scheduled small group departures. Travelling with a small international group offers an opportunity to share cultural discoveries, conversations and memorable experiences with fellow travellers who have similar interests. Prices are based on double occupancy, so a single supplement may apply if you request a room for individual use. Please contact Pacébo before booking to discuss accommodation preferences, possible room-sharing arrangements and any applicable supplements. Travelling independently does not mean you need to book a private tour.

Will I have a private room throughout the journey, including the traditional village stay?

Room arrangements depend on the accommodation available at each destination. At hotels, single or double occupancy may be arranged according to confirmed booking preferences, subject to availability and any applicable supplements. The traditional tongkonan stay in Toraja offers a different experience, where space, facilities and privacy may be more limited than in a conventional hotel. A private room or bathroom should not be assumed for this particular night. Pacébo will explain the sleeping arrangements before your reservation is confirmed so that you can make an informed decision.

What happens if my preferred departure does not reach the minimum number of guests?

This journey requires at least four confirmed participants for a guaranteed departure. If the minimum has not been reached, Pacébo will explain the departure status and discuss the available options with booked travellers. Depending on circumstances, these may include joining another scheduled departure or considering an alternative arrangement. Any changes, cancellations or applicable refunds will follow the booking terms confirmed for your reservation. We recommend checking whether your departure is guaranteed before purchasing non-refundable flights or making other fixed travel commitments.

Who will I travel with, and what language will the group use?

Our small group departures may bring together travellers from different countries, backgrounds and age groups who share an interest in South Sulawesi's landscapes and living cultures. You do not need to know the other participants beforehand. English is the guiding language specified for this journey, allowing the group to enjoy explanations and shared activities together. Guests who are less comfortable speaking English should discuss their needs with Pacébo before booking. Additional language assistance should not be assumed unless it has been specifically confirmed.

What if I cannot complete the walking programme in Toraja at the same pace as the group?

The walks around Limbong are an important shared part of this journey, and participants should be comfortable walking on rural paths, including uneven or potentially slippery ground. The expedition leader will consider the group's capabilities and local conditions when managing the pace. However, individual participants cannot always take a completely different route without affecting transport, staffing or the schedule of others. Please inform Pacébo of any mobility concerns before booking. Where practical, an alternative arrangement may be considered, but it must be assessed and confirmed in advance.

Do I need to be able to swim to enjoy the island excursion near Bira?

No. Snorkelling is an optional activity, and guests who prefer to remain out of the water can still appreciate the islands and coastal scenery. Participants should tell their guide about their swimming ability and any concerns before the boat excursion. Sea conditions, currents and visibility can change, so entering the water is always subject to appropriate safety conditions and the guide's assessment. As this is a small group journey, alternative activities may be limited by the shared boat schedule. Non-swimmers should never feel obliged to enter the water.

How should I plan my arrival in Makassar so I do not miss the group's departure?

We recommend arriving in Makassar at least one day before the scheduled start of the journey, particularly if you are travelling internationally or have several flight connections. The first day's programme begins with a group meeting before a substantial overland journey, so late arrivals can affect the itinerary. Please confirm your meeting time and location with Pacébo before booking flights. If your flight is delayed, inform our team immediately. The group may not be able to postpone departure, and any alternative transfer arrangements would need to be assessed separately.

Can vegetarian meals, food allergies or special dietary requirements be accommodated in a small group?

Pacébo will make reasonable efforts to accommodate dietary preferences and restrictions when informed well before departure. However, meals are arranged for the group across several regions, including smaller towns and a traditional village stay where ingredient choices and cooking facilities may be limited. Vegetarian alternatives can often be considered, but individual menus and separate food preparation cannot always be guaranteed. Guests with serious allergies, gluten-free requirements or strict dietary restrictions should provide detailed information before booking so that the available arrangements can be assessed safely and realistically.

Overland Travel

Several days involve long drives, particularly the journey from Makassar to Toraja. Arrival flights should be coordinated with the first day’s programme, allowing time for the river excursion and onward travel.

Trekking & Village Stay

Days 4 and 5 follow rural paths through rice terraces, villages and forested hills. Walking arrangements depend on the selected route and ground conditions. Sleeping arrangements and facilities for the tongkonan stay are confirmed before travel.

Respectful Encounters

A Toraja funeral ceremony may be visited if one takes place during your stay and the host family welcomes visitors. Your guide explains the etiquette and customary gift, which is payable separately. A visit to Pasar Bolu may also be arranged when market schedules allow.

Sea & Lake Conditions

Boat excursions depend on weather, water levels and local conditions. Island routes and snorkelling sites may be adjusted, and marine-life sightings cannot be guaranteed.
