Journey: Long river passage; timing depends on tides, currents and weather
Travel approximately 2½ hours by speedboat to Sipanap, then change to a smaller motorised wooden canoe for the shallower waterways towards Mabul, roughly two hours further on. Continue to the landing selected by your local team and walk into the rainforest. Porters carry the expedition equipment as you reach your host community and settle into camp.

Spend the day with Korowai hosts, learning about their relationship with the forest. Activities may include sago processing, fishing, gathering forest foods, tool-making or traditional construction, according to the season and daily routines. Where invited and accessible, visit elevated houses still in use. Return to camp for a second night in the forest.
Walk back to the river and retrace the smaller waterways by motorised wooden canoe through Mabul and Sipanap. Change to the larger speedboat for the journey to Suator, pausing for lunch before continuing downstream to Jinak. Settle into a local guesthouse for the evening.
Set out around 06:00 for the return to Agats, an estimated three-hour river journey subject to conditions. The afternoon is reserved for rest, with the option of a short walk through town or an informal visit to local artisans. Take time to refresh and reorganise after the forest expedition.
Visit the Asmat Museum of Culture and Progress to explore the meanings carried by carvings, shields, drums and ancestral figures. Continue by private boat to a nearby community, meeting woodcarvers and observing activities taking place that day. Return to Agats for a final dinner in the Asmat region.

Papua's highlands, southern rainforests and coastal regions experience different weather patterns, making it difficult to identify one ideal season for the entire journey. Rainfall is possible throughout the year, particularly in the remote forest and river regions. River levels, regional flight operations and local accessibility can be more important than seasonal averages. Pacébo recommends discussing your preferred travel dates well in advance so that the expedition can be planned around local conditions, operational requirements and your personal interests.
We recommend beginning preparations at least three to six months in advance whenever possible. This complex expedition requires coordination between regional airlines, specialist guides, river transport operators, expedition personnel and community hosts across several parts of Papua. Some services have limited capacity, particularly in remote regions. Early planning provides greater flexibility when selecting dates and arranging the journey. Shorter booking periods may be considered, but availability and the feasibility of completing all arrangements cannot be guaranteed.
Connectivity varies significantly throughout the expedition. Mobile networks and internet access may be available in major towns but become unreliable or completely unavailable in remote villages, along rivers and within forest settlements. Electricity and charging facilities may also be limited during the more isolated stages. We recommend bringing fully charged power banks, downloading important travel documents and informing family members that communication may be interrupted for extended periods. Continuous connectivity should not be expected during this journey.
Pacébo will make reasonable efforts to accommodate dietary preferences and restrictions when informed sufficiently in advance. However, food supplies become increasingly limited in remote Papua, where ingredients must often be transported over considerable distances. Vegetarian meals and other alternatives may require special preparation, while severe food allergies or strict dietary restrictions need individual assessment before booking.
