Epic Papua — Highlands, Ancestors & Living Frontiers

Arrive in Makassar and transfer privately to your hotel. Meet your expedition leader for a briefing covering the journey, cultural customs and field conditions. Review your luggage, arrange storage for items not required in Papua and rest before the early flight east.

Fly via Jayapura to Wamena, crossing Papua’s mountain interior before descending into the Baliem Valley. Meet your highland team and continue to The Baliem Valley Resort. The afternoon allows time to settle in, adjust to the altitude and enjoy a gentle introduction to the surrounding landscape.

Explore Dani villages around Jiwika and Kurulu, passing sweet-potato gardens and traditional honai houses. Walk uphill towards the salt springs to learn about an established highland practice. A visit to preserved ancestral remains may be arranged with the custodial family’s permission, alongside time for village walks and conversation.

Activity: Easy to moderate walking, including an uphill section

Travel to Sogokmo and set out with your local guide through cultivated hillsides and settlements along the Baliem River. Follow paths towards Kurima, crossing suspension bridges where conditions allow. A picnic accompanies the walk, with the route and turnaround point adapted to the terrain, weather and your pace.

Activity: Approximately 4–5 hours’ walking · Moderate

Spend the day with a Dani community through arrangements made with local hosts. Discover how gardening, cooking, noken making and traditional architecture form part of daily life. A hosted earth-oven meal may be arranged in advance with the community. Return to the resort with time to reflect on the day’s encounters.

Leave the highlands on a morning flight to Jayapura. Transfer privately to your hotel and enjoy an afternoon at leisure after the valley’s walks and community visits.

Explore Lake Sentani by private local boat, visiting island communities and waterside settlements. On Asei Island, meet artists whose bark paintings draw on the lake’s stories and surroundings. Continue across the water, with time for a village visit or viewpoint as local arrangements allow.

Fly south to Timika and prepare for the river and forest stages. Repack into expedition duffels and dry bags, leaving larger luggage in secure storage. Your team reviews baggage allowances, equipment and onward arrangements. A short visit to Kuala Kencana may be arranged if time and local access permit.

Fly to Ewer, then continue by local transfer to the jetty and private speedboat to Agats. Explore the town’s raised walkways with your Asmat guide, gaining an introduction to a community shaped by rivers and tides. The afternoon remains light before the longer river journey inland.

Flight: Wings Air · Timika (TIM) → Ewer (EWE) · 08:25–09:10

Travel inland by private covered boat, following broad rivers past forest margins and scattered settlements. Your field team accompanies this long river journey, with refreshments and lunch provided along the way. Arrive in Suator and settle into local accommodation prepared for the expedition.

Journey: Long river passage; timing depends on tides, currents and weather

Travel approximately 2½ hours by speedboat to Sipanap, then change to a smaller motorised wooden canoe for the shallower waterways towards Mabul, roughly two hours further on. Continue to the landing selected by your local team and walk into the rainforest. Porters carry the expedition equipment as you reach your host community and settle into camp.

Activity: River travel and rainforest trekking · Moderate to demanding

Spend the day with Korowai hosts, learning about their relationship with the forest. Activities may include sago processing, fishing, gathering forest foods, tool-making or traditional construction, according to the season and daily routines. Where invited and accessible, visit elevated houses still in use. Return to camp for a second night in the forest.

Walk back to the river and retrace the smaller waterways by motorised wooden canoe through Mabul and Sipanap. Change to the larger speedboat for the journey to Suator, pausing for lunch before continuing downstream to Jinak. Settle into a local guesthouse for the evening.

Set out around 06:00 for the return to Agats, an estimated three-hour river journey subject to conditions. The afternoon is reserved for rest, with the option of a short walk through town or an informal visit to local artisans. Take time to refresh and reorganise after the forest expedition.

Visit the Asmat Museum of Culture and Progress to explore the meanings carried by carvings, shields, drums and ancestral figures. Continue by private boat to a nearby community, meeting woodcarvers and observing activities taking place that day. Return to Agats for a final dinner in the Asmat region.

Visits on Days 14 and 15 may be reordered to accommodate museum opening hours and community arrangements.

Return to Ewer by private speedboat and local ground transfer for your flight to Timika. Settle into your hotel and enjoy an afternoon at leisure, allowing time to rest after the river and forest stages.

This day provides flexibility for changes affecting regional flights or river travel. If the expedition has operated on schedule, enjoy time at the hotel or a privately guided visit to coastal communities near Timika. Gather in the evening for a farewell dinner with your expedition team.

Transfer privately to the airport for your flight to Makassar, where the expedition concludes. The preferred afternoon service allows a relaxed final morning in Timika. An additional night in Makassar can be arranged before an international departure.
