FAQ

Common Questions

What is the best time of year to visit Toraja and Lake Tempe?

South Sulawesi can be explored throughout the year, although the experience changes with the seasons. The generally drier months, particularly from May to September, are often favourable for countryside walks and cultural exploration. Rainfall can occur at any time, especially in the Toraja highlands, while seasonal water levels influence the landscape around Lake Tempe. Pacébo recommends choosing your dates according to your interests and allowing some flexibility for changing local conditions.

Is this journey suitable for families with children or older travellers?

This journey can be suitable for families and older travellers who enjoy cultural exploration and are comfortable with extended road journeys. Some visits involve steps, uneven village paths and walking through rural landscapes. Guests with limited mobility or those travelling with young children should discuss their requirements with Pacébo before booking. Where practical, individual activities can be shortened or adjusted to provide a more comfortable experience, although accessibility cannot be guaranteed at every location.

What clothing and footwear should we bring for the highlands and lakeside areas?

We recommend lightweight, breathable clothing for the warmer lowlands, together with a light jacket or sweater for Toraja's cooler mornings and evenings. Comfortable walking shoes with reliable grip are useful on village paths and uneven terrain. A lightweight rain jacket, sun protection and insect repellent are also advisable. For boat excursions, a small waterproof bag will help protect cameras and personal belongings. Modest clothing is recommended when visiting traditional communities and culturally significant sites.

Are there cultural considerations when photographing Torajan villages and local communities?

Photography is generally welcome in many public areas, but visitors should always respect the privacy and customs of local residents. Ask permission before photographing individuals, entering private spaces with a camera or documenting family and religious activities. Certain ancestral sites and ceremonial objects may require particular sensitivity. Your guide can explain local expectations and help request permission when appropriate. Professional photography and drone filming may be subject to additional regulations or permissions.

Can we purchase traditional Bugis silk directly from local weavers?

Purchasing handmade Bugis textiles can be a meaningful way to support local craftsmanship. Depending on the workshop and available stock, visitors may have opportunities to purchase fabrics or finished pieces directly from the artisans. Designs, materials and prices vary according to the weaving technique and complexity of the work. There is no obligation to purchase anything, and guests are encouraged to respect the artisans' time and pricing. Any purchases are personal expenses and are not included in the journey price.

Can vegetarian meals, food allergies or special dietary requirements be accommodated?

Pacébo can assist with dietary preferences and restrictions when informed sufficiently in advance. Vegetarian meals and other alternatives may be arranged, although food choices can be more limited in rural areas than in major cities. Guests with serious allergies, gluten-free requirements or strict dietary restrictions should provide detailed information before booking so that suitable arrangements can be assessed. While every reasonable effort will be made, completely allergen-free food preparation cannot always be guaranteed.

Should we carry cash, or are credit cards widely accepted along the route?

Credit and debit cards are accepted at many established businesses in larger towns, but cash remains useful in villages, small markets and traditional workshops. Travellers may wish to carry a modest amount of Indonesian rupiah for personal purchases, refreshments and optional gratuities. ATM availability and electronic payment facilities can be limited outside urban centres. Pacébo recommends arranging sufficient local currency before travelling into more rural areas, while keeping cash and valuables secure.

How should we plan our arrival and departure flights for this five-day journey?

We recommend sharing your intended flight schedule with Pacébo before purchasing non-refundable tickets. The first day involves a substantial journey from Makassar towards Toraja, so an early arrival or an overnight stay in Makassar before the tour may provide a more comfortable start. On the final day, the return from Sengkang is expected in the late afternoon, depending on traffic and road conditions. An evening flight should only be considered after sufficient transfer time has been confirmed. Travellers seeking a more relaxed departure may prefer an additional night in Makassar.
